The Bernina Hotel was founded in 1932 by two brothers of the family "à Porta" (from the Swiss canton of Grisons - extreme eastern Switzerland). The name was chosen in reference to the "peak of the Bernina" which is part of a famous mountain chain in the region of Grisons.
The father of the current Director made the front page of a hotel magazine at the time because he was the youngest manager in Switzerland (22). Unfortunately he died before reaching 35 years, leaving his son, aged only 24 year to takeover. In 1976 Mr Paul à Porta, current Director, is promoted General Manager of the institution. It's now over 35 years he held this position.
Today, despite the difficulties related to the crisis and the Swiss franc, the hotel with a great location, proven experience and a loyal staff, continues to thrive. Traditional hotels like our, will be facing increasing competition from large chains, but we look forward to be still serving you in 2032 to celebrate our centenary, because you are unique and so are we!

In contrast to ultra-standardized chain & lacking of charm, we provide rooms and a traditional welcome. The experience of our dedicated team is here to prove it. Our concierge "golden keys" is a perfect example. 15 years serving guests whose expectations constantly evolved but the quality of service keep at the top. Our product is far from uniform, as our charming hotel is in a building dating from 1855 and provides almost unique rooms. There is choice for everyone (large or small, facing railway station, balcony, overlooking the fountain, shower or bath) to satisfy everyone expectations.
Service is our passion but we also give great importance to the "perceived quality" and "price / quality" ratio. Generous and eager to showcase local producers and markets, we refuse to sacrifice standards of quality for cost reasons. We may spend a little more but we know that on a long term basis we are winning.
It is important to work with partners in the region also for environmental reasons (our pressing for the laundry is in Geneva for example). Quality of work & service prevail on potential money saves. For these personalized services we are pleased to have as partners; local companies and Swiss companies. Quality such as confort and durability are essential because we want to offer you the best and we want also sustainable products. The Company "Schwob" (rent of linen) for instance is the latest in Switzerland to produce textiles still 100 % cotton.
This comes with a price but it is worthy for us and especially for YOU !
30 employees make up our team. Far from the standards of the major groups, the family of the Bernina is faithful and devoted. Our team of Housekeeping for example, is composed almost exclusively of people from Portugal. The result is a solidarity and a sense of belonging even more marked. We are pleased to work with an intern at the reception because it is also our duty to form the manager for the future. It is also a chance for us to benefit from a fresh and young perspective about our business. Language courses are offered almost free of charge (up to 75%). We also have some university students who are part of the reception. They are flexible and enthusiastic and we allow them to earn an income next to studies. We enjoy this "win-win" relationship. A night porter is leaving at the end of the year after having brilliantly completed his doctorate. He is returning to teach in his country. This is a great pride for us to have benefited from his skills and to have taken part in its success.
"Turnover" is a word that does not exist here. It is a known fact that the hotel industry does not pay well (in swiss comparison), but we believe that a job well done deserves a descent salary. That's why our employees are paid above the industry standards. They deserve it!
We believe that well treated, respected and listened to, our employees will be even more satisfied and therefore offer a much better service to our customers.
It is also a form of recognition because we know that it is only thanks to those dedicated men and women that the hotel can accommodate in excellent conditions, day after day, hundreds of people. Without them we are nothing.
